Private Company Executive Pay Often Exceeds That of Public Corporations, Syzygy Consulting Group Reports

Press Release - June 14, 2007

LAFAYETTE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Syzygy Consulting Group LLC reports that private companies, led by leveraged buy-outs and private equity firm purchases, are offering greater levels of executive compensation than anytime in the past. “Public companies are struggling to retain key employees who see the upside potential offered at private companies,” observed David Broman, CEO of Syzygy Consulting Group, a San Francisco Bay Area executive compensation consulting firm.

Recent trends indicate that public companies are being significantly outpaced by the private sector, creating a pay gap in the market for CEO and executive talent. Private companies carve out a greater portion of stock, which is distributed to executives and Board members to lure them from the public sector. Top executives, engineers and sales and marketing professionals are gaining great experience working for public technology companies like Google, Yahoo! and Apple, and then jumping ship to work for private companies who offer greater rewards and more enriching jobs.

“There is no drama about potential high levels of compensation in the private sector,” stated Broman. “Outrageous levels of pay are considered ‘o.k.’ because it’s all performance-based,” he added. “We see our public clients being more measured in their pay decisions, while our private clients are quick to offer significant payouts in exchange for significant returns.”

Private companies represent a significant portion of the labor market. To further understand how these companies attract and retain talent, Syzygy is seeking private technology companies to participate in its annual compensation survey.

Administered since 1999, Syzygy’s nationwide 2007 Pre-IPO and Private Company Total Compensation Survey is the only one of its kind conducted in association with leading law firms including Cooley Godward, Fenwick & West, Gibson Dunn, Heller Ehrman, Morgan Lewis, Pillsbury Winthrop, and Simpson Thacher.

The survey reports upon total cash and stock compensation data for Board members, CEOs and other executives. It also reports on the total compensation provided to management and other employees in over 35 benchmark jobs.

“It’s a myth that private companies offer low pay for more stock. Many private companies pay good salaries in addition to performance-based stock grants,” said Broman.
